Summary

The neutrally positioned cervical spine is first rotated, passively and maximally, away from the side to be tested. Once in this position it is gently flexed as far as possible moving the ear towards the chest. The test is positive if a bony restriction totally blocked the lateral flexion part of the movement. Subluxation of the first rib at the costotransverse joint has previously been suggested as a possible cause of TOS.
