Summary

Sonographic view of the STT joint injection. The needle appears as an echogenic dot (horizontal arrows) between the bony cortices of the scaphoid (SCPH) and trapezium (TRZ) bones. Note the carpometacarpal joint (CMC) to the right of the STT joint (STT JT). FCR indicates flexor carpi radialis tendon. Bottom is deep; left, proximal; right, distal; and top, superficial.

The transducer is oriented nearly parallel to the first metacarpal and placed over the STT joint so that the joint appears in the center of the display screen. The needle is advanced using an out-of-plane (short-axis) approach in a radial-to-ulnar direction and is advanced into the joint.
