Nerve Type | Mixed nerve |
Origin | T12, L1 |
Major Branches | Lateral and anterior branches |
Sensory innervation | Skin of lower abdomen |
Motor innervation | Transversus Abdominis, Internal Obliques |
The iliohypogastric nerve is a mixed type nerve. It is a branch of the lumbar plexus, primarily arising from the anterior rami of the T12 and L1 spinal nerves. It provides sensory innervation to the skin over the lower part of the anterior abdominal wall and the upper part of the gluteal region. Additionally, it supplies motor innervation to the internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles.
Path
The iliohypogastric nerve typically emerges from the lateral border of the psoas major muscle, travels anteriorly and inferiorly, and pierces the transversus abdominis muscle near the iliac crest. It coarse between the internal and external oblique muscles.
It then divides into a lateral cutaneous branch, which supplies the skin over the gluteal region, and an anterior cutaneous branch, which supplies the skin above the pubis.
