Autism and Chronic Pain

A 2022 study in Pain journal explored how individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have a less efficient pain modulation profile. Adults with ASD reported significantly higher pain ratings of suprathreshold heat stimuli and were hypersensitive to both experimental and daily life pain situations and had less efficient inhibition of tonic pain. These results challenge the widely held belief that individuals with autism are indifferent to pain.^[1]
