General arthrocentesis contraindications

  • No absolute contraindications for diagnostic arthrocentesis
  • Do not inject steroids into a joint that you suspect is already infected
  • Relative Contraindications:
    • Overlying cellulitis
    • Coagulopathy
    • Joint prosthesis (refer to ortho)
