The term dermatome generally refers to an area of skin innervated by a particular neural element, specifically nerve root, dorsal root ganglion or spinal segment. These are distinct from the cutaneous nerve distributions. Dermatomes are dynamic, and can expand and shrink, and vary depending on the precise structure being tested and the method of testing.
