Upper Subscapular Nerve
Nerve Type
Motor nerve
Origin
Arises from the posterior cord of the brachial plexus carrying C5โC6 fibers.
Course
A short axillary branch that travels posteriorly on the anterior surface of the superior subscapularis to enter the muscle near the scapular neck.
Major Branches
Muscular branches to the superior portion of subscapularis with occasional small articular twigs to the glenohumeral joint.
Sensory innervation
No cutaneous field, providing proprioceptive afferents from the supplied part of subscapularis and possible articular fibers to the shoulder.
Motor innervation
Superior subscapularis contributing to humeral internal rotation and dynamic anterior stabilization of the glenohumeral joint.
