Pectoralis Minor
Muscle Type
Origin Superior margins, outer surfaces of 3-5th ribs near cartilages. Also fascia over corresponding intercostal muscles
Insertion Medial boder, superior surface of coracoid process of scapula
Action Origin fixed: Tilts scapula anteriorly (i.e. in coronal plane, coracoid process moves anteriorly and caudally, inferior angle moves posteriorly and medially.

Insertion stabilised: assists in forced inspiration

Spinal innervation C6, C7, C8, T1
Peripheral Innervation Medial Pectoral Nerve, plus fibres from communicating branch of Lateral Pectoral Nerve

Manual Muscle Testing

Patient: Supine

Test: Forward thrust of shoulder. The arm is adducted to the side of the body. Patient should avoid pushing down with their hand.

Pressure: Against anterior aspect of shoulder, pushing downwards towards table.
