Palpation

Deep to the abductor pollicis brevis along the lateral shaft of the first metacarpal

Manual Muscle Testing

The patient has their forearm in supination with wrist in neutral, thumb adducted, and MCP and IP joints in flexion. Resistance is applied at the head of the first metacarpal into lateral rotation, extension, and adduction to test the opponens pollicis and the palmar surface of the fifth metacarpal (trying to โ€œflattenโ€ the palm) for the opponens digiti minimi.
