Adductor Pollicis
Muscle Type
Origin Oblique fibres: capitate bone and bases of MC2-3.

Transverse fibres: Palmar surface of MC3

Insertion Transverse head into ulnar side of base of proximal phalanx of thumb. Oblique head into extensor expansion.
Action Adduction of CMCJ. Adduciton and assistance with flexion of MCPJ. Thumb moves towards plane of thumb. Assists in opposition of thumb towards little finger. May assist in extending IPJ (oblique fibres)

Manual Muscle Testing

Patient: Sitting or supine

Fixation: Stabilisation by clinician or resting on table

Test: Thumb adduction towards palm

Pressure: Against medial aspect of thumb, into abduction away from palm
