Brachialis
Muscle Type
Origin Distal half of anterior surface of humerus and both medial and lateral intermuscular septa
Insertion Tuberosity and coronoid process of ulna
Action Origin fixed: Elbow flexion

Insertion fixed: Elbow flexion moving the humerus towards forearm (e.g. pull up)

Synergists
Antagonists
Spinal innervation C5, C6
Peripheral Innervation Musculocutaneous Nerve
Vasculature

Manual Muscle Testing

Biceps Brachii and Brachialis

Patient: Sitting or supine

Fixation: One hand under elbow

Test: Elbow flexion slightly less than or at 90 degrees, with forearm supinated

Pressure: Against lower forearm into extension

Weakness: Decreased ability to flex forearm. In a musculocutaneous lesion causing weakness of biceps and brachialis there will be pronation of the forearm before flexion (using brachioradialis, ECRL, pronator teres, wrist flexors)
